Abstract
Total 278 cases of stomach cancer admitted in our surgical clinic between January 1, 1955 and June 31, 1961 bas been analyzed. The results axe as follows. 1. 196 cases were male and 82 cases female. Gastric cancers were decidely higher for male than female, a ratio of 2.4 to 1. 2. 49%(136 cases) of stomach cancer patients had under 6 months of suffering. 3. The most frequent complaints were epigastric pain and abdominal discomfort, indigestion, presence of tumor and vomiting. These are order of its frequency. Tumors were palpable in 78.1%(217 cases). 4. The results of gastric juice analysis are as follows; anacidity 41.2%(75 cases), hypoacidity 34.6%(63 cases), normoacidity 17.6%(32 cases) and hyperacidity 6.6%(12 cases). 5. Occult blood in stool was discovered in 58%(109cases). 6. 88.8%(247 cases) of 278 cases was operable. 7. Among 247 cases of operated patients 55.8%(138cases) was resected. 8. On 138 cases of resectable cancer patients, following surgical procedures were performed; total gastrectamy 1.4%(4 cases), subtotal gastrectomy 36.3%(101cases) and partial gastrectomy 11.9%(33 cases). 9. After stomach resections, the locations of tumor were confirmed and 43.3%(107 cases) was found in pylorus, 28.8%(71 cases in antrum, 15.4%(38 cases) in lesser curvature, 7.7%(19 cases) in cardia, 3.6%(9 cases) in greater curvature and 1.2%(3 cases) in stomach fundus. 10. Lymphatic metastasis was recognized during operation in 85.2%(199 cases) of 247 resected cases. 11. Microscopic analysis of operation specimens are as follows; adenocarcinoma 58.3%(144 cases), anaplastic type 26.7%(66 cases), mucinus type 12.6%(31 cases), squamous cell cancer probably originated from lower portion of oesophagus 2.4%(6 cases).
12. The resectability of stomach cancer in our is increased from 43.5% in 1956 to 65% in 1960. Palliative resection is included in this study.
